Scotland 'Eylanden van Hitland, Eylanden van Hebrides, Eylanden van Fero' Jacobsz, A. (c. 1676) 53 x 43 The Islands of Shetland, Hebrides, and Faroe. Three maps on one folio double page by the Amsterdam family of Jacobsz. Founded by Anthonie Jacobsz and later continued by sons Jacob and Caspar, the business published primarily Sea Atlases. Notably "A Zeespiegel" an Atlas which went into many later editions. They also used the name Lootsman to avoid confusion with other publishers. Scotland 'Scotland South Part' Mercator, G. (c. 1613) 46 x 35 Early map of South Scotland by Gerhard Mercator. Mercator's atlas is regarded as one of the most important in the history of cartography, this issue being published after his death in 1594 and after the copper plates were bought by Hondius. Mercator was the first cartographer to extensively use the type of projection now named after him for maps and charts. He was also the first to use the term, atlas to mean a bound collection of maps. Scotland 'The North Part of Great Britain Called Scotland...' anon. (c. 1731) 26 x 19 Finely engraved map of Scotland by an anonymous hand, possibly Blome from the atlas "England Exactly Described or a Guide to Travellers…" first published by Thomas Taylor, but herewith from the later edition published by Thomas Bakewell. A major addition to the earlier plates is that roads and distances between towns are now included, after the road surveys of John Ogilby.
